13th Annual Hops for Hunger Returns

December 1, 2021

It’s that time of year again!

Great Lakes Brewery (GLB) we’ll be “fighting to end hunger in our communities” with the 13th annual Hops for Hunger campaign in support of Daily Bread Food Bank.

Kicking off on December 1st, and running for the duration of the month, GLB will be working hand-in-hand with Daily Bread in a variety of ways, to help raise funds for their hunger relief efforts, while gathering much needed food donations and building community spirit.

“We are proud to build on the 13-year relationship we have with Daily Bread Food Bank as they continue to do amazing work in communities in and around the city of Toronto,” said Peter Bulut, Owner of GLB.

“Last year, thanks to the generosity of the Etobicoke/Toronto community, we were able to donate $10,800 to Daily Bread from the sale of our two speciality Daily Bread beers. We also collected approximately 3,000 lbs of food during our first ever food drive, and together, this resulted in nearly 14,000 healthy meals for our neighbours experiencing food insecurity.”

COLLABORATION BEERS

* Beginning on December 1st, any customer who purchases a can of ‘Daily Bread White Eggnog Stout’ will help contribute $1 to our Etobicoke neighbours at Daily Bread. Pretty great right! Purchase and drink a delicious well-crafted beer and help your community at the same time.

”White Eggnog Stout, which we brewed in support of Daily Bread for the first time back in 2018 and continues to be very well received each holiday season, is just wonderful,” said Bulut“It is 5%, features notes of vanilla, allspice and tastes just like eggnog. Very creamy, soft on the palate – a great holiday beer.”

In addition to the White Eggnog Stout, and back by popular demand, is ‘Belgian Winter Ale’, a 6.2% holiday spiced beer that bursting with notes of orange zest, vanilla, cinnamon and allspice, all complemented by a distinctive Belgian yeast.

Cans of these specialty beer(s) will retail for $4 each and will be available through the GLB online shop for free local delivery. Customers will also be able to purchase White Eggnog Stout and/or Belgian Winter Ale in person at the GLB retail store at 30 Queen Elizabeth Blvd, Etobicoke. $1 from each can sold, of either brand, will be donated to Daily Bread.

That $1 that we’ll be donating provides 1 wholesome, nutritious meal for an individual or family in need.

FOOD DRIVE

“Food bank use has risen dramatically over the past few months due to the impact of COVID-19. Now more than ever, the support of our community partners is essential to ensure that Torontonians in need of food have a place to turn to as we head into the winter months”, says Neil Hetherington, CEO, Daily Bread Food Bank“We are grateful to our friends at Great Lakes Brewery for their continuous support of Daily Bread Food Bank through the Hops for Hunger campaign.”

GLB will be hosting our 2nd annual Food Drive on Saturday December 11, encouraging customers to stop by the brewery with non-perishable food items between 10am – 4pm. Staff from the brewery will be on-site to safely gather donations from the parking lot and will be sorting food into bins that will eventually be delivered to Daily Bread.

Last year, thanks to the generosity of the local Etobicoke community, GLB collected approximately 3,000 lbs of food, which equals to 3,000 meals for local families.

“We were blown away by the amount of donations we received last year,” said Peter Bulut, Owner of GLB. “Our goal this year is to collect 5,000 lbs that we can deliver to our partners at Daily Bread. For every 1 lb of food collected, Daily Bread is able to provide food for 1 additional meal for someone experiencing hunger.”
