2nd Annual GLB HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

Published on December 1, 2021

Help us fight hunger right here in our community!

GLB will be hosting our 2nd annual Food Drive in support of the Daily Bread Food Bank during our 13th annual Hops for Hunger campaign.

Join us on Saturday December 11, here at the brewery, and donate non-perishable food items between 10am – 4pm.

Staff from the brewery will be on-site (outside) to gather donations from the GLB parking lot and will be sorting food into bins that will make their way to Daily Bread for those in need. Our staff will also be accepting monetary donations through our retail store as well, should you wish to help out.

During the pandemic, we saw a huge increase in the number of people accessing food banks — 1.45 million client visits across the city — and we’d never be able to meet that need without partners like Great Lakes Brewery who always make sure to give back to the local community”, says Neil Hetherington, CEO, Daily Bread Food Bank.

“We are grateful to our friends at Great Lakes Brewery for their continuous support of Daily Bread Food Bank through the Hops for Hunger campaign.

Last year, thanks to the generosity of the local Etobicoke community, GLB collected approximately 3,000 lbs of food, which equals to 3,000 meals for local families.

“We were blown away by the amount of donations we received last year,” said Peter Bulut, Owner of GLB. “Our goal this year is to collect 5,000 lbs that we can deliver to our partners at Daily Bread. For every 1 lb of food collected, Daily Bread is able to provide food for 1 additional meal for someone experiencing hunger.”

Like last year, any customer that makes a donation of 20lbs or more will get a complimentary (paid for) 4 pack of GLB beer and the sincere thanks of a grateful brewery.

Some sobering facts from Daily Bread

For the first time ever, new clients accessing Toronto food banks outnumbered existing clients, with a 61% increase in new clients compared to the year prior.

Although a sense of normalcy is slowly returning to our city, for the tens of thousands of individuals living in poverty, the reality is very different.

Over the past year, there have been 1.45 million visits to Toronto food banks, the highest number ever recorded in the city’s history.

But it doesn’t stop after December 11th.

As part of the annual Hops for Hunger campaign, GLB will have two speciality beers available in support of Daily Bread – White Eggnog Stout and Belgian Winter Ale. $1 from each can sold will be directly donated to Daily Bread (while supplies last). Both beers will be available as of December 1st here in the GLB retail store and on December 2nd through the online shop. For every $1 raised, Daily Bread is able to provide food for 1 additional meal for someone experiencing hunger.

Also, throughout the month of December, GLB is also encouraging customers shopping in person at the brewery retail store to donate non-perishable food items, along with baby food and diapers. Customers can drop items in the yellow Daily Bread collection bin located within the store and GLB will ensure they are delivered to Daily Bread at the conclusion of the Hops for Hunger campaign.

Supporting local never felt so good.
